Vegas…Strippers…Jesus…Small Groups

headshotThere was a “Fad” that swept through the religious community a few years back and it looked like this…WWJD!  I am not too big on “Fads” especially whenever it comes from the religious community.  But the whole thought behind it was to ask yourself the question…”What Would Jesus Do?”  As we approach the final week before we celebrate the birth of Christ, I have contemplated on just that…What Would Jesus Do if He lived in Vegas?  Where would He go? Who would He talk to? What church would He attend?  Or Would He attend a church in Vegas?  What shows would He go see? Anyway, you get the idea…How would Jesus minister if He were born in ”Sin City” instead of Bethlehem?

One of our pastors here at Central has been asking that question and recently I believe she discovered one of the answers to that question…He would go to where the people need Him the most!  This past weekend, after much prayer and asking for God’s wisdom and discernment, Rhonda Baker our Women’s Small Group Ministry Pastor led the Central Women’s Small Group Ministry to throw a Christmas Party for Strippers and their children in a Vegas Strip Club!  (Yes, this is where you ask the question…”Can you do that?”)  The idea is not to preach to them but to show them the unconditional love of Jesus Christ during this Christmas season!  Here is an excerpt from the events and maybe some ideas to help you start a Women’s Small Group Ministry that reaches out beyond the walls of the church and show love to strippers and their families in the city where you live!

Preparation for the Christmas Party for women in the adult entertainment industry is well under way.  We’ll try to keep you updated.  Linzy (the mousketeer in the picture), Mary, and I had a great time shopping for the children the other night, that is until we checked out (minor mishap).  George sure was patient as nothing seemed to go right when he was checking us out (I mean, checking out the gifts for us – however this should be written – just don’t read it the wrong way).  It gave me a chance to talk with him about his faith.  Don’t worry George, I’ll be back to say thank you again! With fifty gifts in three carts we’re lucky no one was in a bad mood behind us.  I was disappointed I had run out of Christmas invitations to hand out, but also didn’t want to leave an impression in the moment that we’re the church that holds up the line.

(There are 4 parts to this story so click HERE to read the rest of the story.)

You will definitely want to subscribe to the Women’s Ministry Blog and add comments to help give insight for other leaders and pastors!  Share some ideas of how you or your ministry is sharing the love of Jesus this Christmas in a radical way.  (Note:  Sharing Jesus love in ANY way is RADICAL!)

Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!
